These homeowners wanted more space for their growing family as well as flexible space for guests and for working from home. The goal was to add square footage while maintaining the proportions of their small home and compact intown lot, as well as staying consistent with their mid-century modern style. We replaced the existing deck with a small addition that serves a variety of functions: guest bedroom, home office, and family room space. We moved the desk out of the existing mudroom and replaced it with an efficient pantry cabinet conveniently located near the kitchen. The new office area is more removed from the action of the rest of the house and enjoys natural light and backyard views. The well-proportioned addition does not overwhelm the small house, and greatly increases livability, function, and comfort.
